BLM Implements Fire Restrictions in Washington and Oregon

Fire Restrictions Enforced on BLM Lands in Washington and Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. — In a proactive measure to combat the growing threat of human-caused wildfires, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has instituted fire restrictions effective Thursday across all public lands in Washington and Oregon. This decision comes in response to an alarming increase in fires initiated by human activities.

Under the new regulations, several activities are strictly prohibited, including the use of exploding targets, metallic targets, and ammunition containing steel components, as well as incendiary devices, tracer ammunition, sky lanterns, and fireworks. "The number of human-caused fires has only increased over the years," stated Jeff Fedrizzi, Fire Management Officer for BLM Oregon and Washington.

Violators of these fire restrictions face serious legal repercussions, with potential imprisonment for up to 12 months or hefty fines that can reach $100,000. Additionally, individuals found responsible for sparking wildfires may be liable for costs associated with fire suppression efforts.

These measures underline BLM’s commitment to preserving the safety and integrity of public lands while safeguarding communities from the devastating impacts of wildfires. As dry conditions and the heightened risk of wildfires loom during the summer months, these restrictions are essential in fostering a cooperative approach toward fire prevention.

Public awareness and compliance are vital, as the BLM emphasizes the collective responsibility to protect the environment. With everyone’s cooperation, it is hoped that the measures will substantially lower the risk of future wildfires across the region, ensuring safer outdoor experiences for all.
