Dillon Gabriel Shines as Cleveland Browns Rookie Quarterback
Former Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel is making headlines as he embarks on his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns. Selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Gabriel is competing for the starting quarterback position against notable talents, including Shedeur Sanders, a fifth-round pick who many expected to be a top-five selection.
Confusion arose among NFL fans regarding Gabriel’s earlier draft position compared to Sanders, whose stock fell dramatically prior to the draft. However, early assessments from Browns rookie minicamp suggest Cleveland may have made the right choice. ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi noted that Gabriel outperformed Sanders, showcasing a tight spiral and impressive pocket presence, qualities that he had developed during six years of collegiate play at UCF, Oklahoma, and Oregon.
"I thought both days Dillon Gabriel looked a little bit better," Grossi stated, praising Gabriel’s assertiveness and arm strength despite concerns about his 5-foot-11 stature. While Gabriel shines, Sanders remains an excellent prospect with potential.
Gabriel and Sanders are in a competitive mix that also includes veteran quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. The absence of Deshaun Watson, due to an Achilles injury, adds intensity to the competition.
Embracing the challenge, Gabriel reflected on his experience: "It’s not new to me. I’ve done it at every stop, and I’ve done it at every level," he said, emphasizing a focus on self-improvement.
Both quarterbacks are set to showcase their skills during the Browns’ preseason, beginning with a matchup against the Carolina Panthers on August 8, followed by games against the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams before the regular season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.
