Rosa Collins-Okah Praises NSC While Reflecting on AFN Challenges and Achievements
Former Nigerian triple jumper and Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s (AFN) second Vice President, Rosa Collins-Okah, has spoken candidly about her journey in athletics, including her leadership during Nigeria’s standout performance at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon. Despite celebrating the historic achievements of Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume, she revealed ongoing personal grievances with the AFN, particularly the non-payment of her expenses.
Collins-Okah, who famously won gold at the African Games in 1995, reported to The Guardian that she has yet to receive reimbursement for her flight to Oregon, which she had to cover herself due to the fully booked tickets. “I had to travel on business class and begged my husband to pay for my ticket pending when AFN would settle me,” she shared. She also expressed her disappointment over her treatment by the AFN’s current leadership following the championships.
Her relationship with AFN president Tonobok Okowa has soured since the 2021 elections, where she initially sought to run for the presidency but later withdrew in his favour. Collins-Okah alleges mismanagement and claims that Okowa has misrepresented their fallout, emphasizing that requests for business-class accommodations were not the issue.
Beyond her AFN concerns, she recently commended Bukola Olapade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), for including her in the Local Organising Committee for the upcoming African U18/U20 Championships in Abeokuta in July 2025. Collins-Okah expressed gratitude for the opportunity, highlighting her commitment to serving her country and advancing athletics in Nigeria amidst the ongoing challenges within the federation.
