Election Day in Oregon: A Focus on Local Matters
As Election Day approaches, Oregonians are gearing up to cast their votes on critical local issues, primarily related to education. Voters across all 36 counties will be selecting school board representatives and making decisions on funding for key K-12 and community college construction projects.
Secretary of State Tobias Reed emphasized the importance of this election, stating that even though the May 20 special election may not garner as much attention as general elections, it still holds significant implications for everyday life in Oregon. “We’re going to determine who’s running schools, how we’re going to fill potholes and how we’re fighting fires,” remarked Reed.
All registered voters should have received their mail-in ballots by now. Completed ballots must be dropped off at official drop boxes by 8 p.m. on Tuesday to be counted. Oregon operates on a 100% vote-by-mail system; however, Reed advises that submitting ballots at official drop-off locations is preferable at this late stage to ensure timely processing.
While there are no statewide measures on this ballot, notable county-level items are drawing attention. Voters in Portland, the state’s largest school district, will decide on a substantial $1.83 billion construction bond aimed at funding projects like the reconstruction of six high schools, alongside safety and technological upgrades. Meanwhile, Mount Hood Community College is seeking approval for a $136 million general obligation bond to enhance its facilities and safety measures across its district—from East Portland to Government Camp.
