The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of cucumbers from Bedner Growers, Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc., due to a Salmonella outbreak affecting over 20 individuals across several states. These cucumbers were distributed to various businesses between April 29 and the present, but details on their specific sales locations are still being determined.
The cucumbers may have been sold individually or in smaller packages, some possibly lacking distinctive labeling. The affected products are categorized under names like ‘supers,’ ‘selects,’ or ‘plains.’ FDA investigations revealed that samples collected during a recent inspection tested positive for Salmonella Montevideo, matching clinical samples from affected individuals. This follows a prior Salmonella Africana outbreak linked to the same grower last year.
Salmonella is a significant cause of foodborne illness, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noting it causes approximately 1.35 million infections in the U.S. annually. Symptoms can include stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, typically occurring six hours to six days post-exposure. Vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are at higher risk for severe illness.
As of the latest update, at least 26 cases have been reported across 15 states, with nine hospitalizations and 11 out of 13 interviewed patients having consumed cucumbers. The FDA advises consumers, restaurants, and retailers to sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with the contaminated cucumbers and to dispose of any suspect stock. The ongoing investigation aims to clarify further details surrounding the outbreak.
