Oregon Child Welfare Director Aprille Flint-Gerner Steps Down for New Opportunity
Oregon’s Director of Child Welfare, Aprille Flint-Gerner, will depart from her position to accept a new role with Casey Family Programs, a foundation dedicated to reducing the reliance on foster care. Flint-Gerner has led the state’s child welfare division since 2023, previously serving as its interim director. Her tenure has been marked by significant scrutiny from both lawmakers and the courts, particularly following a civil lawsuit regarding the state’s inadequate treatment of foster youth, settled recently.
In her resignation letter, described as “bittersweet,” Flint-Gerner expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve Oregon amidst various challenges and successes. She requested an exit interview, acknowledging the complex landscape of child welfare in the state.
Rolanda Garcia, a seasoned professional with nearly 30 years of experience in child welfare and self-sufficiency programs, will assume the role of interim director. Fariborz Pakseresht, the Director of Human Services, commended Flint-Gerner’s leadership, emphasizing her contributions to fostering a strong foundation in Oregon’s child welfare system.
Flint-Gerner’s new position will allow her to influence child well-being on a national scale and provide her with the flexibility to care for her family. Her annual salary was reported at approximately $225,000, with her final day in office set for June 11.
As the state navigates the transition, officials are optimistic that Garcia’s extensive experience will help further the progress made to enhance the lives of children and families across Oregon.
