Election Night Highlights from Albany: Schools and Levy Decisions Await Results

Albany, OR — As Election Day unfolds, local races and key measures are closely monitored, with several significant contests still too close to call. The Greater Albany Public Schools (GAPS) At-Large 2 race is one of the tightest, where retired teacher Kris McLaughlin leads with approximately 38% of the vote, trailed closely by Tim Washko, a supply chain director, also holding nearly the same percentage—4,659 votes for McLaughlin and 4,566 for Washko.

In a more definitive outcome, Measure 22-209, which seeks to renew a 25-year-old tax levy for local police and fire services, is projected to pass convincingly, boasting a margin of 78% in favor amidst early results. Albany officials anticipate this renewal will generate about $32.5 million over the levy’s five-year duration.

Meanwhile, the school board elections within the GAPS show mixed results. Candidate Stephanie Lunceford seems poised for victory in Zone 2, leading with 54% of the votes over Jenna Gould. However, the incumbent race for Brad Wilson remains tight, with Wilson securing 39% against challenger Kristopher Schendel’s 34%.

In Harrisburg, incumbent Lonnie Hutchens leads challenger Jennifer Krebs by just 26 votes in one contested seat, while Sweet Home has incumbents Michael Adams and Erin Barstad ahead in their respective zones.

Voter turnout statistics show Benton County at 25% and Linn County at 19%, demonstrating a competitive electoral climate as results continue to roll in. Election Day updates will be provided as they come in, with comprehensive coverage expected later tonight.
