Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Unveils Historic Images of USS F-1 Submarine

October 2023 – SAN DIEGO, CA: A groundbreaking deep-sea expedition by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) has surfaced stunning, high-definition images of the USS F-1, a U.S. Navy submarine lost in 1917 near San Diego. The vessel sank on December 17, claiming 19 crew members, and its final resting place remained undiscovered for over a century.

Utilizing advanced underwater technology and collaborative efforts across multiple agencies, researchers employed the human-occupied vehicle (HOV) Alvin alongside the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Sentry to explore the wreckage situated nearly 400 meters underwater. The team successfully captured unprecedented footage and created 3D photogrammetric models of the submarine, shedding new light on this piece of naval history.

Bruce Strickrott, senior pilot for the expedition and manager of the Alvin Group at WHOI, noted the vital role of teamwork and technology in this venture. “Advanced ocean technology and simple teamwork played a big part in delivering these new images,” he said, reflecting on the dive’s significance and honoring his past as a U.S. Navy veteran.

The mission not only emphasizes WHOI’s commitment to oceanographic exploration but also highlights the National Deep Submergence Facility’s essential role in such undertakings. Lisa Clough, acting division director for the NSF Division of Ocean Sciences, stated, “The NDSF provides essential equipment for reaching the deep ocean,” showcasing its importance in preserving historical artifacts and training future ocean scientists.

This successful expedition reinforces the connection between advanced marine research and cultural heritage, preserving the legacy of the USS F-1 while advancing scientific understanding of deep-sea environments. For more information, please visit the WHOI website.
