As the nation prepares to observe Memorial Day on May 26, various local and regional events are scheduled to honor the brave members of the armed forces who have fallen while defending the United States. Numerous ceremonies, parades, and gatherings will take place across Oregon, offering communities a chance to pay their respects.
Key events include ceremonies at national cemeteries such as Willamette National Cemetery in Portland and Fort Stevens National Cemetery in Warrenton, where individuals and groups are invited to honor the fallen by placing flags and flowers. Notable ceremonies will also occur at city-managed and private cemeteries across the state.
In Salem, the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs will host a commemoration at the state Capitol, featuring remarks from veteran leaders and local officials. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs for the 11 a.m. ceremony at the Oregon World War II Memorial.
Beaverton’s Veterans Memorial Park will see its own tribute, organized by VFW Post 124, including live music, a military flyover, and a POW/MIA ceremony at 11 a.m. Meanwhile, the Vietnam Veterans of Oregon Memorial in Washington Park will honor those lost in the Vietnam War with a program starting at 10 a.m., highlighting rituals such as the reading of names and a rifle salute.
Further north, the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site will host a morning of remembrance at 9:30 a.m., featuring guest speakers and live music. A brief ceremony at the Oregon Korean War Memorial in Wilsonville will also take place at 10 a.m.
