Five Years On: The Site of George Floyd’s Death is a Place of Reflection and Serenity


On the five-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death, George Floyd Square in Minneapolis was filled with hundreds of attendees honoring his memory. Visitors placed colorful flowers, including yellow roses, at his memorial, reigniting calls for justice. Chauvin received sentences totaling 43 years, and Minneapolis implemented police chokehold bans and received substantial pledges for racial equity initiatives.

Activists like Nekima Levy Armstrong criticized the ongoing systemic issues that perpetuate violence against Black Americans, demanding stronger leadership and reform in city governance and police administration. City Council member Andrea Jenkins observed a mix of somber reflection and resolve among community members, acknowledging both the changes that have occurred and the need for further progress. She emphasized that while significant steps have been taken, the journey toward true justice and safety for all residents remains ongoing.
