Browns Draft Dillon Gabriel: A Surprising Choice with Big Potential
In a surprising move during the 2025 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected quarterback Dillon Gabriel from the Oregon Ducks in the third round. Known for his impressive accuracy and decision-making skills, Gabriel is expected to compete for the starting quarterback position alongside fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders, veteran Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett.
Cleveland’s head coach, Kevin Stefanski, emphasized the importance of a quarterback’s decision-making during a media session at the NFL Combine. “Every single play as a quarterback, you’re making crucial decisions,” he stated, highlighting the need for accuracy and innate ability. Gabriel’s track record supports this philosophy; while at Oregon, he completed 72.9% of his passes, throwing for 3,857 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just six interceptions, ultimately leading the Ducks to the College Football Playoff.
Despite lacking ideal physical measurables, Gabriel’s ability to process information pre-snap and manipulate defenders is noteworthy. NFL Draft Buzz’s Taylor Lennox commended his college performances, particularly against Maryland and Boise State, suggesting that Gabriel’s skills could prove invaluable in the NFL.
As the Browns transition with new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, Stefanski will continue to manage play-calling. Gabriel faces strong competition from Sanders, a highly-touted fifth-round pick known for his accuracy as well. If both can adapt their collegiate success to the NFL, the Browns may find themselves facing a tough decision in selecting their starting quarterback.
With organized team activities (OTAs) set to resume Tuesday, fans and coaches alike will be closely observing the quarterbacks as they vie for the top spot on the roster. Cleveland’s future may hinge on the performance of these promising young talents.
