Before her trip to Beaver Creek, Colorado, 13-year-old Zoe Durias had never skied, but as a cancer survivor, she embraces the challenges of life. “It’s all about the ups and downs in life,” explained Ski Instructor Chloe Wasserstrom, who partnered with Durias during her adventure.
This ski trip was organized by the Sunshine Kids, a nonprofit dedicated to providing memorable experiences for children who are battling or have survived cancer. Diagnosed in 2022, Durias recently celebrated being three years cancer-free, reflecting on her journey. “After treatment, I thought everything would go back to normal, but it never did,” she stated. Yet, she finds joy in her new connections, asserting that if life had returned to normal, she would not have met the incredible people she has.
The American Childhood Cancer Organization notes that 1 in 285 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20. The Sunshine Kids program plays a vital role in connecting these children, helping to alleviate feelings of isolation and anxiety. “Those bonds will help them as they move forward to battle their disease and realize that they don’t have to battle alone,” said Sunshine Kids Executive Director Jennifer Wisler.
The trip not only provides children like Zoe an opportunity to enjoy life outside hospital walls but fosters friendships that can last a lifetime, emphasizing resilience and community among young cancer survivors. With support and shared experiences, these kids can celebrate life and the triumphs that come with overcoming challenges.
