Three inmates involved in a significant jailbreak from New Orleans’ Orleans Justice Center have been apprehended, while two remain at large. Jermaine Donald, 42, accused of second-degree murder, and Leo Tate, 31, facing burglary and firearms charges, were captured in Texas by the Texas Department of Public Safety. They were found in Walker County, north of Houston. Another inmate, Lenton Vanburen, 26, who had charges related to firearms and parole violations, was arrested in Baton Rouge.
These three will face additional charges following their escapes on May 16. Specific details regarding their legal representation are unclear. The incident involved alleged complicity from a jail maintenance worker, Sterling Williams, who has been accused of facilitating the escape by disabling the water supply to a cell’s toilet, allowing inmates to remove it without causing a flood. Williams claimed he acted under threat, fearing an inmate would harm him if he did not comply. The inmate identified as Antoine Massey has not yet been captured.
After removing the toilet, the inmates reportedly sawed through steel bars and exited through a hole in the wall, scaling a barbed-wire fence using blankets to escape. Authorities released a photo displaying graffiti above the toilet stating “To Easy Lol” and “We Innocent,” highlighting the inmates’ defiance. The operation’s complexity and the alleged cooperation of jail staff underscore the seriousness of the breach, marking it as one of Louisiana’s most significant jailbreaks to date.
