Breakthrough Investigation at West Coast Park Safari Uncovers Major Drug Operation and Animal Welfare Issues
Coos County, Ore. – A significant investigation into animal welfare at the West Coast Park Safari near Bandon has unveiled a troubling nexus of drug offenses and poor animal care. On May 15, a raid executed by the Coos County Sheriff’s Office yielded approximately 80 grams of methamphetamine. Further investigations, prompted by concerns over the park’s operations, led authorities to discover an arsenal of 44 firearms—including a modified machine gun—along with eight grams of cocaine and nearly $1.6 million in cash, bonds, and checks.
The park’s owner, 52-year-old Brian Tenney, was arrested on Tuesday and faces multiple charges including possession, manufacturing, and attempted distribution of methamphetamine. This investigation has been ongoing since last fall, stemming from repeated USDA citations—78 in the past year alone—pertaining to animal care, licensing, and overall business practices at the park.
Coos County Sheriff Gabe Fabrizio expressed his disbelief at the scale of the operation, highlighting unprecedented agency collaboration throughout the investigation. The park housed over 300 animals, including deer, big cats, and bison. Due to alarming health conditions, authorities were compelled to euthanize a camel and a kinkajou, while all other animals have been relocated to accredited facilities, such as the Wildcat Sanctuary in Minnesota.
Oregon State Police, who emphasized the priority of animal welfare in their ongoing efforts, may press additional charges regarding the park’s conditions for its residents. The investigation illustrates severe lapses in animal care and raises pressing questions about regulatory enforcement within such establishments. The case serves as a sobering reminder of the complexities surrounding wildlife and public safety.
