Oregon Zoo Owner Arrested on Drug Charges After Police Raid

Zoo Owner Arrested in Drug Raid, Hundreds of Animals Relocated

BANDON, Ore. — Authorities have arrested Brian Tenney, the owner of West Coast Game Park Safari, following a significant police raid earlier this month, which led to drug seizures and the relocation of hundreds of animals. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest on Tuesday, charging Tenney with possession, manufacturing, and attempted distribution of methamphetamine. He was released later that day as the district attorney’s office sought additional information.

The raid took place on May 15, prompted by an investigation into the welfare of the animals at the facility located near Bandon, a small town on the southern Oregon coast. During the operation, police recovered 80 grams of methamphetamine, 44 firearms, approximately 8 grams of cocaine, and a staggering $1.6 million in cash and financial instruments.

Veterinarians and personnel from the Oregon Humane Society, along with state wildlife and agriculture departments, assessed the animals’ health on-site. Their findings led to the relocation of 310 animals to various sanctuaries and rescue organizations. Unfortunately, some animals, including a camel, a chicken, and a kinkajou, were euthanized after evaluations deemed them beyond help.

The investigation remains ongoing, as authorities continue to explore the implications of this case both in terms of drug-related crimes and animal welfare. The community has been left shocked by the revelations surrounding the zoo, known for its diverse collection of wildlife.

This incident highlights not only the issues concerning animal captivity and welfare but also the grim intersection of illegal drug activity and caring for animals in captivity. Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
