Governor Kotek to Relocate Temporarily Amid Renovations at Mahonia Hall
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek is planning to temporarily move out of the governor’s mansion, Mahonia Hall, this summer as it undergoes extensive renovations. The project, expected to last several months, has prompted Kotek and her wife to seek short-term rental accommodations. The decision is detailed in a letter from Shannon Ryan, executive of the Department of Administrative Services, to the Oregon ethics commission.
The governor has not confirmed specifics about their relocation. It is uncertain whether they will remain in the Salem area or return to Portland, where the couple previously owned a home. Ryan’s letter indicated that Kotek is exploring rental options in the Portland region with anticipated costs ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 per month.
Due to the hazardous nature of the renovations, which will significantly impede the habitability of Mahonia Hall, it is essential for the state to provide temporary housing for the First Family. Elizabeth Shepard, Kotek’s communications director, refrained from disclosing further details about their rental search, citing security concerns. She emphasized that efforts would be made to find the most cost-effective housing.
The ethics commission has stated that it would not be a violation for the state to cover Kotek’s temporary housing costs, recognizing it as part of her compensation package. This policy aligns with previous governors who maintained homes in Portland while in office, allowing for flexibility during their tenure.
As renovations progress at Mahonia Hall—used for both residence and official business—Amy Williams recently appointed as the executive residence director, will oversee the operation of the historic site. Kotek has utilized Mahonia Hall for various public events, including receptions supporting legal accessibility initiatives.
