Southern Oregon Claims Historic Fourth NAIA Softball Championship
COLUMBUS, Ga. – Southern Oregon University’s softball team has etched its name in history by clinching its fourth NAIA championship in six years, overcoming remarkable odds along the way. After an initial tournament loss, the Raiders staged a stunning comeback, winning seven elimination games, a feat never before accomplished in the 44-year history of the NAIA Softball World Series.
The decisive victory came Thursday against Oklahoma City University, where Southern Oregon secured a 6-3 triumph in a winner-take-all showdown at the South Commons Complex. This win marked the Raiders’ second championship against OCU and solidified their position as a dominant force in the league, now boasting the second-most titles in NAIA history.
The game turned early when second baseman Vanessa Lang smashed a three-run home run, her first of the season, in the bottom of the first inning, giving the Raiders a crucial lead that they maintained throughout the match. Southern Oregon’s head coach, Jessica Pistole, praised the team’s camaraderie and highlighted the clutch performances from different players.
Freshman pitcher Ayla Davies, named the World Series MVP, further anchored the Raiders’ success. She pitched her eighth consecutive complete game, striking out seven batters and establishing a tournament record for total strikeouts with 71 over 61 innings. With a season record of 38-5 and an impressive 1.20 ERA, Davies emerged as the winningest pitcher in SOU history.
The championship run was emblematic of the resilience and skill of the Raiders, who outscored their opponents 35-2 in the tournament. The team showcased depth with multiple players earning spots on the All-Tournament team, reinforcing their legacy in collegiate softball.
