Royal Beard Leaves a Lasting Legacy in Oregon Lacrosse
Published: May 30, 2025
Liberty High School’s senior lacrosse standout, Royal Beard, has made significant waves in the sport, especially during his final high school season. After a loss to Nelson/Clackamas in the OHSLA state playoffs, Beard’s illustrious career comes to a close. He achieved remarkable success, finishing his high school journey in the top-10 of Oregon’s all-time scoring list with 184 goals. This season alone, he netted 58 goals, solidifying his reputation as a prolific scorer.
Beard’s journey began at the young age of seven, influenced by his father, Robert Beard, a longtime coach. His dedication to lacrosse became evident as he transitioned from Century High School—where he scored 39 goals as a freshman—to Liberty, where he notably scored eight goals in a single game against Oregon City, tying for the third-highest in state history. "It means a lot for me to showcase my talent alongside some of the state’s best," said Beard about his scoring achievements.
As the sport of lacrosse grows in popularity in Hillsboro, Beard acknowledges the rising talent but notes the challenges in competing with established schools like Jesuit and Lake Oswego. He attributes their success to specialized coaching and intensive training.
Despite his success on the field, Beard has chosen to pursue a different path after graduation—enlisting in the Army rather than playing collegiate lacrosse. He expressed a desire for hands-on experiences over the classroom setting, stating, “I’m a hands-on guy and hate just sitting still.”
Though he’ll miss the game, Beard plans to stay connected through coaching and clinics in the future, leaving behind a formidable legacy in Oregon lacrosse.
