Severe Storms Sweep Across South and East Coast While Heat Lingers in the West

This weekend, over 4 million people in parts of the South, Plains, and East Coast face risks from severe weather phenomena including damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of tornadoes. Recent days have seen destructive storms, with Kentucky experiencing EF2 tornado damage and Tennessee, EF0 damage. Scattered thunderstorms will continue into the weekend, particularly affecting the Plains and East Coast, with a slight severe weather risk forecasted for parts of Oklahoma and Kansas, including cities like Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Wichita.

On Sunday, severe weather threats extend into Texas, with Waco, Bryan, and College Station facing risks primarily from large hail and damaging winds, while tornadoes cannot be excluded.

In contrast, 14 million people in California are under heat alerts, experiencing temperatures 10 to 25 degrees above average. Highs are projected between 95 and 110 degrees, with possible record temperatures in Las Vegas and Reno. Last Friday, downtown Los Angeles recorded a high of 96 degrees, surpassing a 51-year-old record. These extreme temperatures raise fire concerns, prompting alerts in parts of California and Nevada, especially with gusty winds and low humidity enhancing wildfire conditions.

Additionally, a strong cold front is drawing smoke from wildfires in Canada into the U.S., triggering air quality alerts for over 20 million people in the Midwest, including Minnesota and Michigan. Polluted air and hazy skies may extend as far south as the Gulf Coast, though improvements in air quality are anticipated in the Upper Midwest by mid-week.
