Portland Arts and Sports Organizations Collaborate to Revitalize Downtown

Portland Sports and Arts Unite for Economic Revival

Portland, OR – June 11, 2025 – In a groundbreaking collaboration, Portland’s premier sports and cultural organizations have joined forces to bolster the city’s economy and enhance the downtown experience. Dubbed the Sport Art Coalition, representatives from top entities, including the Oregon Symphony, Portland Timbers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Oregon Ballet Theatre, spoke at the Portland Metro Chamber’s monthly breakfast forum, emphasizing the vital role of sports and the arts in the city’s vitality.

"We are joining together in a way that has never happened before," stated Isaac Thompson, CEO of the Oregon Symphony. The coalition aims to address shared needs for city-owned venue improvements and public safety enhancements to attract more attendees to local events.

Panelists stressed the importance of mutual support for the region’s economic health, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. As crowds gradually return, they called for increased governmental support to facilitate recovery, highlighting the complexities of venue management between the city of Portland and the Metro Regional Government.

Key discussions centered on the necessity of funding for new projects, such as a proposed Performing Arts Center at Portland State University and a Major League Baseball stadium in the South Waterfront district. The Moda Center, home to the Portland Trail Blazers, also requires upgrades to remain competitive for significant events, like hosting an NBA All-Star Game.

Public-private partnerships emerged as a prominent theme, exemplified by the Timbers’ collaboration with TriMet, which allows fans to use game tickets for transit fare on match days.

The forum is part of a larger ongoing effort to revitalize downtown, which includes the "All In for Portland’s Central City" initiative advocating for walkable neighborhoods and new affordable housing. With a focused commitment, coalition members are optimistic about the future of Portland’s economic landscape.
