Local News Landscape in Oregon Worsens, Amid New Initiatives by Lincoln Chronicle
By QUINTON SMITH, Lincoln Chronicle
The University of Oregon’s Agora Center recently updated its alarming report on the state of local news in Oregon, emphasizing a continued, rapid decline in newspaper outlets. Since the original report three years ago, the urgency of this crisis has intensified, revealing a heightened closure rate of local newspapers nationally—averaging two closures each week.
In Oregon, significant closures include the Medford Mail Tribune and another notable county-seat publication. Meanwhile, larger newspaper chains have undergone cuts in newsrooms following acquisitions. Amid these troubling trends, the Lincoln Chronicle—formerly YachatsNews—has emerged as a beacon of hope. For over six years, this digital news outlet has committed to covering vital community stories, including education, environmental initiatives, and socio-economic challenges.
With a dedicated team of two reporters, an editor, and several freelancers, the Chronicle brings essential local stories to its audience of approximately 170,000 monthly readers. Recent coverage has highlighted issues like budget cuts at Siletz Valley School and potential disruptions at the Angell Job Corps Center.
The Chronicle is turning to its community for support, aiming to raise between $40,000 and $50,000 to bolster operations, including hiring a new Newport-based reporter. With tax-deductible donations and a unique matching opportunity that doubles contributions up to $50,000, community members can significantly impact local journalism.
To address the state of local news, the Lincoln Chronicle staff is hosting community meetings in Newport and Yachats. These meetings aim to engage residents, explain operations, and discuss future plans. With the input and support of community members, the Chronicle is dedicated to fostering a more informed public and ensuring a vibrant local news ecosystem in Oregon.
