25 Automatic Hand Recounts Initiated in Oregon’s May Election

Automatic Recounts in Oregon Elections: Ensuring Accuracy and Trust

Oregon’s May 20 election has prompted automatic recounts in 25 closely contested races. State Secretary of State Tobias Read highlighted that while recounts may adjust vote counts slightly—by one or two votes—they are unlikely to alter the overall results. Automatic recounts occur when margins are exceedingly close, specifically within 0.2% of the total votes.

During an interview with OPB, Read noted the absence of centralized statistics on discrepancies between initial counts and recounts, complicating the evaluation of election accuracy. He expressed commitment to fostering public trust in the electoral process, suggesting that gathering such statistics through a collaboration with Oregon’s 36 counties might be beneficial.

Notably, elections in Oregon are managed at the county level, meaning discrepancies can arise from various sources, including the mechanics of ballot scanning machines. In contrast, recounts are conducted manually with at least two county electors from different parties overseeing the process. The potential for human error remains, especially when voters fail to mark ballots as intended.

Read, who won his legislative race by a mere 86 votes in 2006, acknowledged that while recounts can lead to slight adjustments in votes, it’s rare for them to impact the final outcome. Counties including Baker, Clatsop, and Deschutes are among those experiencing recounts due to tight election results. In Lane County, officials confirmed that four races, including a school board contest, remain unchanged post-recount.

Voters can increase the accuracy of electoral processes by ensuring consistent signatures on ballots and DMV registrations. For detailed information on local recounts, residents are encouraged to reach out to their respective county elections offices.
