Increasingly prevalent among overweight, diabetic, and metabolic syndrome patients, fatty liver disease—now termed metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)—is capturing the attention of health experts. While early symptoms are often absent, experts warn that without prompt intervention, MASLD can escalate into a severe condition known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). This progression substantially raises the risk of liver cancer.

Research from the MD Anderson Cancer Center highlights that MASH can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, and cirrhosis, each linked to hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common liver cancer type. Approximately 25% of those with MASLD may develop MASH, which leads to critical liver cell damage. Dr. Jessica Hwang, an internal medicine specialist, reveals that once fibrosis occurs, the liver damage becomes challenging to reverse and significantly elevates cancer risks due to ongoing cellular injury.

Who’s at risk? Major contributors include individuals who are overweight or obese, those with type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, and those with a familial history of liver disease. Recognizing warning signs like fatigue, upper abdominal discomfort, and elevated liver enzymes is crucial for early detection.

Fortunately, MASLD is preventable and often reversible if caught early. Experts recommend lifestyle modifications such as maintaining a healthy weight, following a balanced diet rich in whole foods, engaging in regular exercise, improving sleep quality, and managing blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

With MASLD becoming an alarming public health issue worldwide, awareness and lifestyle choices are pivotal in combating its rise and reducing associated cancer risks. Early intervention can safeguard liver health and promote a better quality of life.
