Oregon Department of Human Services Chooses New Director Amid Transition
Oregon’s Department of Human Services (DHS) is set for a leadership change as long-time director Fariborz Pakseresht retires on October 1 after a distinguished 35-year career, including the last eight years as director. Governor Tina Kotek announced that Liesl Wendt, currently the agency’s deputy director, will take over the role.
Pakseresht’s tenure has not been without challenges, facing public calls for his dismissal earlier this year from unionized workers caring for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They expressed concerns over being overworked, underpaid, and placed in hazardous situations. Despite these issues, Governor Kotek defended Pakseresht, praising his years of service and noting his role in implementing a streamlined benefits application process that has gained national recognition.
Kotek commended Pakseresht for his leadership through various challenges, including a global pandemic and significant natural disasters, and highlighted the department’s commitment to improving services for Oregonians. Notably, the DHS recently agreed to settle lawsuits concerning the foster care system amid ongoing scrutiny of its practices.
Wendt, who brings over 30 years of experience in government and nonprofit services, served as the director of Multnomah County Human Services before joining DHS. Kotek expressed confidence in Wendt’s ability to lead the agency through turbulent times and maintain progress.
“I am honored to step into this role,” Wendt stated, emphasizing her commitment to improving outcomes for Oregonians. Her appointment is pending confirmation from the Oregon Senate in September.
As the DHS operates with a workforce of approximately 10,000 employees and serves about 1.5 million residents, both Wendt and Kotek are optimistic about the agency’s future under new leadership.
