Evacuation Orders Rescinded as California’s Canyon Fire Achieves 28% Containment

Evacuation orders in parts of Southern California were lifted Friday evening as firefighters made progress against the Canyon Fire, which has burned approximately 5,400 acres and is 28% contained, according to Cal Fire. Initially affecting thousands in Ventura and Los Angeles counties, the evacuation status was downgraded to warnings, indicating ongoing threats to life and property. The fire, located north of Los Angeles, has been encroaching toward Castaic in L.A. County.

Firefighters have been aided by favorable weather conditions and enhanced support from firefighting aircraft that have been dropping water and retardant to help control the blaze. Despite the progress, the Canyon Fire continues to pose an active threat as it spreads further east into L.A. County. Three firefighters sustained minor injuries while combating the fire and were hospitalized for precautionary measures, but they are expected to recover fully.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued advisories concerning wildfire smoke, particularly along the I-5 corridor near Castaic Lake, anticipating air quality issues to persist through Sunday morning. Wildfire smoke is concerning due to the fine particulate matter it contains, which can penetrate deep into the lungs, posing risks for asthma and other chronic diseases.

The Canyon Fire ignited Thursday afternoon near Holster Canyon and rapidly engulfed over 1,500 acres. It forms part of a series of larger fires in California, including the Gifford Fire, which has devastated over 100,000 acres since its start on August 1 and remains only 21% contained.
