Garibaldi, OR – August 15-16, 2023 – Oregon Tuna Classic Celebrates 20 Years of Fighting Hunger
The Oregon Tuna Classic (OTC) is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary this August in Garibaldi, Oregon, uniting anglers, sponsors, and coastal communities in a mission to combat hunger while supporting local causes. This prestigious tournament, which began as the grassroots “I Fish for Food Tuna Tournament” in 2005 led by founder Bud Hosner, has evolved into a major charitable fishing event, attracting competitors from across the Pacific Northwest.
Over the years, the OTC has successfully combined competitive fishing with community outreach, donating thousands of pounds of fresh albacore tuna and substantial financial contributions to organizations like the Oregon Food Bank. "From day one, our focus has exceeded fishing; it’s about supporting families and showcasing community strength," stated John Stanfield, OTC Board President. Last year’s tournament significantly impacted local food security, delivering essential high-quality protein to those in need. Kati Duffy, from Oregon Food Bank, highlighted the unmatched opportunity for communities to receive locally-caught fish.
This year, 49 teams will compete, racing offshore on August 16 for the five heaviest fish. Public festivities during the tournament weekend will include fish weigh-ins and player meet-and-greets, culminating in an awards ceremony and fundraiser supporting OTC initiatives. Title sponsor Schooner Creek Boat Works expresses pride in partnering with OTC, emphasizing camaraderie and tradition in supporting coastal communities.
To date, the OTC has donated over 1 million pounds of food and $1 million in cash, aiding both hunger relief and wildlife conservation. The nonprofit remains committed to strengthening the Oregon coast through its volunteer-led efforts and community partnerships, marking a legacy of compassion and collaboration.
