WASCO, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Senator Ron Wyden is poised to seek another term in 2028, marking over four decades in Congress, even as some Democrats urge a generational shift in leadership. At 79, Wyden maintains that he is ready to continue advocating for his state and countering Republican policies, particularly those of former President Donald Trump.
During a recent town hall in Wasco, a conservative region of Sherman County, Wyden acknowledged that discussions regarding age are warranted but emphasized his capability and energy for the role. "I believe you ought to be held accountable," he told the Associated Press, stressing a practical, results-driven approach to governance.
Calls for younger leaders echo in the party, particularly after President Biden’s controversial reelection bid at 81 years old. Amanda Litman, co-founder of Run for Something, highlighted a desire for “competitive primaries” to foster emergent Democratic voices, suggesting that Wyden could face a challenger.
Despite the shifting political landscape, Wyden remains committed to connecting with all Oregonians, hosting 23 town halls this year alone, and he believes this direct engagement combats political polarization.
