Jack Smith aims to expedite Trump’s appeals in election interference case amidst setbacks

Former President Donald Trump’s federal trial over his 2020 election scheme, involving spreading unsupported claims of mass voter fraud, has yet to be scheduled. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan held a status hearing for the case, where a superseding indictment against Trump was discussed. The case has been delayed due to Trump’s appeal to the Supreme Court. Chutkan stated that the trial schedule will not be affected by the 2024 election and cannot be determined at this point due to ongoing appellate issues. Trump’s lawyer plans to challenge the indictment and special counsel’s appointment, claiming they are illegitimate. Chutkan set deadlines for pre-trial briefings to continue past Election Day.

The latest indictment against Trump removed references to certain evidence from his initial indictment following a Supreme Court ruling on immunity. Trump has continued to spread false election claims despite convictions and settlements that found them to be invalid. Hundreds of defendants involved in the January 6 attack on the Capitol have been sentenced, with some receiving probation and others facing several years in federal prison. Prosecutors have charged over 1,400 individuals in connection with the incident. Chutkan previously set a trial date for March 2024, which may be revised due to ongoing proceedings. The case involves charges of conspiracy and obstruction against Trump related to his efforts to overturn the election results.
