Clamming now permitted on entire Oregon Coast

Bay clamming and mussel harvesting are now open statewide in Oregon after being closed for almost a month due to high biotoxin levels. The Oregon Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced the reopenings on Friday after two consecutive tests showed that the biotoxin levels were below the closure limits. However, mussel harvesting remains closed from Coos Bay north jetty to the Washington border, and razor clamming is still closed from Yachats to Coos Bay due to high biotoxin levels.

The ODA will continue testing for shellfish toxins at least twice per month to ensure the safety of harvesting activities. Reopening a closed area requires two consecutive tests with results below the closure limits. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife advises those interested in harvesting shellfish to always check the Shellfish Safety Hotline or the provided link before heading out to ensure that the areas are open and safe for harvesting.

Emma Logan, an outdoors journalism intern for the Statesman Journal, reported on the reopenings and can be contacted at elogan@salem.gannett.com or on Twitter @emmmalogan. Harvesters are encouraged to stay informed and stay safe while enjoying the recently reopened bay clamming and mussel harvesting areas in Oregon.
