Suspect in 44-year-old cold case killing of University of Texas student has been identified

Susan Leigh Wolfe, a University of Texas nursing student, was abducted and murdered in 1980. 40 years later, a suspect, Deck Brewer Jr., has been identified through DNA evidence and charged with her murder. Wolfe was abducted while walking to a friend’s house, found the next morning in an alley in Austin with evidence of being sexually assaulted and strangled. The investigation over the years produced more than 40 persons of interest but Brewer was identified as a possible match through DNA testing in 2023. Brewer was incarcerated in Massachusetts on unrelated charges and invoked his right to counsel after being informed of his DNA being found at the crime scene. The investigation is ongoing, and police are still searching for the individual who was in the passenger seat of the car during the abduction. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Austin Police Department’s cold case unit. Brewer’s DNA was found to be a match with a probability of 1 in 550.5 quintillion of being a contributor to the DNA profile found at the scene. Brewer’s legal representation status is unknown at this time.
