Six arrested in Venezuela for alleged plot to kill Maduro as US denies CIA involvement

The US State Department has denied allegations of CIA involvement in an alleged assassination plot against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Venezuelan officials announced the arrest of three Americans, two Spaniards, and a Czech on Saturday, claiming they were part of a plot to overthrow the government and kill several leaders. The US military member detained in Venezuela has been confirmed, with reports of two additional US citizens also in custody.

The recent re-election of Maduro has been disputed, with the US government imposing sanctions on allies of Maduro accused of obstructing voting and human rights abuses. Spain’s parliament recognized opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez as the election winner, leading to calls to suspend relations with Spain. Tensions between Venezuela and the US have escalated following the election, which sparked protests and led to hundreds of arrests.

Despite international condemnation, Maduro’s victory was confirmed by Venezuela’s supreme court, which charged Gonzalez with conspiracy before he fled to Spain. Maduro has accused the US of trying to overthrow him through sanctions and covert operations.

The Maduro administration has a history of using imprisoned Americans for concessions, as seen in a 2023 deal to secure a presidential pardon for a close ally. Maduro has dismissed requests for tally sheets proving his election win and has long claimed US interference in Venezuelan affairs. The situation continues to escalate as Maduro’s government faces increased pressure both domestically and internationally.
