VIDEO: Hungary prepares for potentially the most severe flooding in ten years

Hungary is on high alert as Storm Boris heads south, with the threat of flooding looming over the country. Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony has warned that the city could face the biggest flood of the decade, as water levels of the Danube are expected to crest at 8.5 metres near the city. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has taken flood defence measures along 540 kilometres of Hungary’s rivers, with a third-degree alert in place along 200 kilometres. He has also approved the opening of an emergency reservoir along the Leitha river to help manage the potential flooding.

Traffic restrictions have been put in place as a precautionary measure, affecting areas in Gyor-Moson-Sopron, Komárom-Esztergom counties bordering the Danube, and the Danube bend area. International train services between Hungary and Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany will also be impacted by the storm.

The Hungarian government is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps to mitigate the risks posed by Storm Boris. Residents are urged to stay informed and follow any evacuation orders or safety recommendations issued by local authorities. With the potential for significant flooding, it is important for everyone to take precautions and stay safe during this challenging time.
