An Oregon official’s use of unconventional pronouns, including they/them/turtle, has sparked controversy and attracted attention from national conservative media outlets. The official, a member of the Oregon Health Authority’s Consumer Advisory Council, has reported receiving death threats and has been advised to move due to the backlash.
While some may view the use of pronouns like turtle as a rejection of gender or an expression of affinity with certain traits, others argue that the focus should be on respecting the individual rather than the language they use. Portland autism researcher Dora Raymaker emphasized the importance of respecting the person regardless of their chosen pronouns.
The council member, who remains anonymous due to safety concerns, expressed appreciation for the acceptance and support they have found within the council, describing it as a group of “weirdos” united in the goal of improving access to healthcare for all Oregonians.
Despite the criticism and threats faced by the official, they remain committed to advocating for inclusivity and understanding in a world where feeling different is not synonymous with being delusional. The council, made up of 22 individuals who may receive a nominal fee for their service, aims to create a safe and supportive environment for members to contribute to the betterment of healthcare in Oregon.
