Six people killed in Kharkiv apartment block during Russian airstrike

A targeted Russian attack using powerful glide bombs in the northeastern city of Kharkiv resulted in the death of six people, including a 14-year-old girl, and left 47 others wounded. The bombs struck five locations in the city, causing significant damage. President Zelenskyy called on Western partners to provide the Ukrainian military with the capability to destroy Russian military aviation to prevent further attacks.

In response to a recent F-16 crash during a Russian bombardment, Zelenskyy fired the commander of Ukraine’s air force and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the crash. The F-16s, provided by Western partners, are seen as an opportunity for Ukraine to counter Russia’s air superiority.

Meanwhile, the Russian army is advancing slowly in eastern Ukraine as Ukrainian forces hold ground in the Kursk border region of western Russia. Amid these developments, EU defense ministers have agreed to boost their training program for Ukrainian troops, aiming to increase the number of trained soldiers to 75,000 by the end of the year.

Despite losses of Western-provided military equipment in the fighting, including F-16s, analysts caution that Ukraine’s ability to operate these aircraft will be impacted. The EU plans to establish a coordination cell in Kyiv to enhance the effectiveness of the training effort for Ukrainian troops.
