Survivors of Grenfell Tower fire: ‘The system was intentionally designed this way, not broken’

In a long-awaited report on the Grenfell Tower fire, survivors and families of the 72 victims expressed disappointment in the findings that attributed the disaster to “decades of failure” prioritizing profit over safety. The inquiry highlighted failures by the government, local authorities, and companies involved in the hazardous cladding and insulation that fueled the blaze. Karim Mussilhy, vice chairman of Grenfell United, emphasized that the system was intentionally built to prioritize money and cover up dishonesty. Prime Minister Keir Starmer apologized for the state’s failure to protect victims and called for justice.

Emma O’Connor, a survivor of the fire, urged for swift action in implementing the report’s recommendations to prevent similar tragedies. She emphasized the importance of funding the fire brigade, especially in North Kensington, where she credits their quick response for saving her life. Measures to remove dangerous cladding from high-rise buildings, including hospitals and schools, were also highlighted as critical.

Currently, 19 companies and 58 individuals are under investigation for their roles in the Grenfell Tower disaster, with potential charges including corporate manslaughter and fraud. However, the police have indicated that any prosecutions may not occur until late 2026 due to the inquiry’s complexity, further frustrating survivors and families. Despite the delays, Mussilhy and others remain resolute in seeking justice and accountability for the failings that led to the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower.
