The United Nations General Assembly has approved a 42-page plan, known as the Pact for the Future, aimed at addressing global challenges, with a focus on climate change. The plan, years in the making, outlines 56 actions for countries to work together on issues such as conflict, digital cooperation, human rights, poverty, and climate change. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised the agreement as a step towards a better future, calling on countries to implement the actions outlined in the pact.
Specifically addressing climate change, the pact calls for a just phase-out of fossil fuels, tripling renewable energy capacity, doubling energy efficiency improvements, and transitioning to net-zero emission energy systems. While the agreement reaffirms commitments made at COP28 in Dubai, critics are cautious about its impact on climate action, highlighting the ongoing struggle between vulnerable nations and fossil fuel-producing states.
As countries prepare for COP29 in Azerbaijan, attention is shifting to how nations will implement the pledge to phase out fossil fuels in their national climate plans. Greenpeace International and other organizations are calling for concrete action plans aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target, as well as robust climate finance to support a just transition away from fossil fuels. The reinforcement of the UAE Consensus in the Pact for the Future is seen as a positive step, but stronger commitments and support for developing nations are needed to make real progress in addressing the climate crisis.
